Tram Cafe, Hue, Vietnam

Top 6 Best Coffee Shops in Hue, Vietnam

Hue, the beautiful ancient capital of Vietnam, is an absolute food and drink haven. The café culture that is prominent in all Vietnamese cities particularly thrives here, and you can barely walk 20 yards down the street without stumbling across an instagram-worthy coffee shop. The city is packed with beautifully designed cafés serving incredible coffees that are made with as much care as a cocktail in a high-end London bar. I made it my mission to try as many as I could in the few days I spent here, and I’ve managed to whittle it down to 6 favourites, including the best place to try the famous Hue salt coffee! If you’re on the hunt for the best coffee shops in Hue, with equally amazing coffee to match, look no further.

1. Tan Cafe

Tan had the most beautiful interiors of all the coffee shops we visited, featuring an industrial vibe and packed with leafy greenery. We both had a coconut coffee at 50K VND each (£1.70), and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. The coffee itself is a work of art, served in a cocktail glass, garnished with delicious coconut chips and served with a golden spoon. There are a few Tan Cafes dotted around the city, but we visited the one at 86 Dinh Tien Hoang.

2. Tram Cafe

Rustic 70s inspired interiors add a unique charm to this lakeside coffee shop that is just waiting to be added to your instagram story. Tram was one of the best value cafes that we visited at 35K VND (£1.19) for a coconut coffee and 25K (£0.85) for an iced lemonade. Both were delicious and Scott puts the coconut coffee at the top of his Hue rankings.

3. Afternoon Coffee

Potentially our favourite coffee shop in Hue in terms of ambience, even though we didn’t have any coffee here! Very French inspired with all-wooden interiors, atmospheric lanterns, and romantic Parisian music playing in the background. Afternoon Coffee sits just outside of the hustle and bustle of the Citadel so it’s less busy and feels more relaxed. But you can still enjoy views of the Buddhist architecture from their lovely balcony. We visited here during the day and at night and had a beer both times (mainly due to the heat), so we can’t comment on the coffee quality, but it’s worth a visit for the good vibes alone.

4. Diamonds Coffee

Diamonds Coffee oozes a Bali-esque vibe with rattan furniture, exposed beams and plants galore. The coffees are an instagram dream, served on a cute wooden plate. You can’t come to Hue without trying the signature Ca Phe Muoi or “salt coffee”. I would really recommend trying it here – it tastes like a strong salted caramel latte and was super delicious. Diamonds was exceptional value too at 32K VND (£1.09) for a salty coffee and 35K VND (£1.19) for a cold brew.

5. La Sach Ca Phe

If you’re looking for more of a local vibe, definitely try La Sach! This place was packed with locals and was the cheapest café we visited at 20K VND (£0.68) for an iced coffee and 26K VND (£0.91) for a coconut coffee. It’s located on Le Huan, the main stretch of road that runs parallel to the Citadel so you can enjoy gorgeous views of the surroundings from the rustic outdoor patio area. Le Huan itself is lined with lots of cool coffee shops – you could spend a whole day café hopping along this street.

6. Nook Eatery

Not technically a coffee shop, but this place deserves a spot on the list as their drinks were top tier. We visited Nook for brunch and I would HIGHLY recommend it. This is a contender for the best breakfast we’ve had in Vietnam. We tried the corn cakes served with cheesy scrambled eggs and sautéed veg, and the bacon sausage burger with fried potatoes. Both were incredible! The coconut coffee and freshly pressed fruit juice were equally delicious. A little on the pricey side at around 310K VND (£10.85) for everything and 55K VND (£1.92) for a coconut coffee, but I’d say it was definitely worth it for the service, quality, and ambience. The outdoor seating area emanated a rustic charm that feels like you are sitting in a family garden.
